Gamma Alpha Bulletin

Vol 18 No 6. March/April 1998

President's Message

Many thanks to Cindy Dietz for arranging the speaker for February’s meeting. Chris Morin told us about Wayne-Westland’s School to Work partnership with Detroit Diesel and Spring Manufacturing. It was very informative. This month we will be meeting five women educators who have been invited to join Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Alpha chapter. Our meeting this month will be purely social. So try to join us and meet our prospective members. There will be no April newsletter, so take note of the two meetings in April. A flyer for the Birthday Dinner and registration forms for the State Convention are also enclosed.

Sherry Green sent a thank you note to Gamma Alpha.

This isn’t really chapter news, but I didn’t know where to put it. Governor John Engler has proposed a reading mandate in his "state of the state" address on January 29th.

"Children who start kindergarten this fall must be able to read by the time they reach fourth grade," Engler said. "Let that be our goal."

Students will be tested for reading ability in the third grade. Those who fail would be required to attend a summer reading program and would likely be held back if they weren’t reading at grade level by fall.

Engler called for a new reading Plan for Michigan and directed the department of Education to develop the program that would:

  • Give parents reading readiness kits by the 1998-1999 school year to help them to instruct their children to read by age 5.
  • Prepare diagnostic tools to assess children’s reading readiness from the first day of school.
  • Monitor the reading progress of every child on an ongoing basis.
  • Design a model summer reading program for children.
